The report: Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) Faculty List - Yale will show ALL GSAS faculty. The report can be filtered for Academic Unit (Primary Appointment).
GSAS Assignment Policy
Per the Faculty Handbook, section IV.D:
Principal advisors of PhD students must have assignments to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Assignment to the Graduate School faculty is automatic under the following circumstances:
For faculty holding primary and fully joint appointments:
- In the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of Public Health: all faculty holding primary or fully joint appointments in the tenure-track ladder ranks (lecturer convertible, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor);
- In the School of Medicine, faculty holding Traditional (tenure-) Track or Clinician-Scientist Track (assistant professor, associate professor, and professor) appointments in the School’s basic science and bridge departments as listed in XIV.B. The tenure track is called the Traditional Track in the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health.
For faculty holding secondary appointments:
- Professional school faculty in the tenure-track ladder ranks (assistant professor, associate professor, and professor) who hold secondary appointments in a department in the FAS or SEAS;
- School of Medicine faculty in the ladder ranks (assistant professor, associate professor, and professor) of the Clinician-Scientist Track who hold a secondary appointment in a department in the FAS or SEAS or in the School of Medicine’s basic science and bridge departments as listed in XIV.B.
- A secondary appointment reflects the appointing department’s determination that a faculty member is fully qualified to teach, advise, and support PhD students in that department.
Assignment to the Graduate School May be Requested for:
- Tenure Track and Clinician-Scientist Track faculty in clinical departments in the School of Medicine;
- Tenure-track faculty in other professional schools, including those that have graduate programs leading to the PhD degree: Architecture, Environment, Law, Management, and Nursing; and
- Ladder faculty in tracks other than the tenure track.
Process to Request GSAS Assignments
Requests for such assignments must be made by the chair of the faculty member’s home department or their professional school’s dean and must be submitted by the home school’s dean to the Graduate School Dean’s Office.
Please email the GSAS Dean’s Office (Leah Jehan leah.jehan@yale.edu) the following information:
- The Candidate’s Curriculum Vitae
- A statement from the faculty member’s chair/dean explaining the grounds for the assignment
- Acknowledgment that the faculty member has been consulted in the process. The faculty member seeking the assignment and the dean of the school must agree to the financial arrangement in force in the student’s graduate program.
Decisions about faculty assignments to the Graduate School will normally be made twice annually by the Dean of the Graduate School or their designees. If the GSAS Dean’s Office approves of the request, they will submit a GSAS Assignment letter to the home department.
After receiving the GSAS assignment letter, OFAS enters in the GSAS assignment in Workday.
