Regular Salary

Academic Salary

All faculty are paid monthly through Workday using the Compensation Plan, Academic Salary.

Note: Faculty who are between appointments need to be paid as Academic Services Providers.

Disbursement Plan Period (DPP)

The distribution of Academic Salary is controlled by the Disbursement Plan Period (DPP).  A paycheck will only be generated in a month that falls within the DPP.

  • For example: If the DPP is 5 month January 1-May 31, pay will not be generated any time between June 1 and December 31.

The DPP also influences the monthly amount to be paid.

  • For example:  If the DPP is 5 month and the compensation amount is $10,000, the monthly payment will be $2,000, ($10,000 divided by 5).  However, if the DPP is 10 month and the compensation amount is $10,000, the monthly payment will be $1,000, ($10,000 divided by 10).

FTE - Part Time vs. Full Time

Compensation is also influenced by the FTE% (full-time equivalent).  If the FTE is 100%, the faculty member is considered to be Full Time and will receive 100% of his or her compensation.  However, if the faculty member is less than 100%, the faculty member is considered to be Part Time and will only receive the Prorated amount of the Annual Salary based on that percentage.

  • Example 1:  If FTE = 100%, Time Type = Full Time, and Compensation = $30,000, the faculty member will receive $30,000.
  • Example 2:  If FTE = 50%, Time Type = PartTime, and Compensation = $30,000, the faculty member will receive a Prorated amount of $15,000.

Many schools at Yale use the following chart for establishing course FTE:

Single-term appointments:
1 course = 13.32 hours (33.3%)
2 courses = 26.64 hours (66.6%)
3 courses = 40 hours (100%)

Full-year appointments:
2 courses = 13.32 hours (33.3%)
3 courses = 20 hours (50%)
4 courses = 26.64 hours (66.6%)
5-6 courses = 40 hours (100%)

Annual Salary vs. Prorated amount

The Annual Salary is the full-time equivalent of the compensation.  If a faculty member is part-time, the actual amount to be paid is the Prorated amount.
